Bathing only when appropriate

Begin with a calm discussion of the agreed work and your cat’s handling preferences. Give your cat time to settle. Hiding, struggling or escalating distress is a reason to pause and reconsider the plan, not rush to complete every item.

After the session

Offer a quiet space afterward and let your cat choose when to interact. Review what was completed and what was deferred, then discuss a realistic coat-care routine between visits.

When it is better to pause.

Painful or extensive matting, sore skin or a sudden inability to self-groom needs veterinary advice. Do not try to solve it by forcing brushing or booking a cosmetic haircut. Cats Protection also recommends veterinary help with matted long-haired coats.

What if my cat has mats?
